Spoiler alert.....messy play is MESSY!

If you and your little one have never been to our messy play club before then you’ll probably have lots of questions. Read on for all the info on what to expect and to make sure you’re both prepared for what’s in store.

The most important thing is to have fun, get stuck in and embrace the mess (knowing that we’ll be doing all of the tidying up at the end!).

When can my baby start attending classes?

It is important that your baby has started weaning and is able to sit independently. They will be keen to taste some of the mess (it’s all part of the sensory experience for them) so we want to make sure that they are able to cope with food and tastes. You’ll need both hands when playing so it is important that your little one is a confident sitter. Please don’t bring your little one along until they are at this stage, we want to make sure that you both get the most out of your messy adventure with us.

What does unstructured child led play mean?

We set up the messy play stations and you move round and explore them with your little one. You are responsible for supervising your child while they participate.

Is my little one a bit old for messy play?

In short, no, our classes cater for little ones right up until they start school. Our lesson plans have all been inspired by the early years foundation stages framework with focus on lots of skills that your mucky monster is always working on developing:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Gross motor skills
  • Social development with sharing, turn taking and co-operating
  • Language development
  • Creative development
  • Body control and balance
  • Shape recognition
  • Colour recognition
  • Counting
  • Problem solving
  • Boosting confidence
  • Encouraging independance
  • Early mark making

What to wear?

For your mucky monster – please bring old clothes or an old vest/baby grow for your little one to wear while they participate in messy play. We always make sure that our venues are toasty warm but clothing is still recommended.

For you – a change of top & trousers is recommended. The best messy play happens when you get involved with your little one so be prepared to embrace the mess!

What will my mucky monster be exploring?

Your messy leader will introduce them self at the beginning of the messy session, they will talk through exactly what messy materials have been used in each station. Our trays are either edible, taste safe, or a texture bin so please be aware of the contents of the station before letting your little one dive in.

We carefully choose our messy play activities to make sure that there are wet, dry, sticky, colourful and plain to ensure that we provide a balanced sensory experience. All of our stations are age appropriate and safe for our little ones

We want familiar textures to be available at the same time that we are introducing new ones so there are lots of plastic toys, cups, utensils at our sessions to give a sense of familiarity. Classes are always laid out in the same way everywhere and we repeat activities often to help your mucky monster becomes comfortable and familiar with the environment.

What time should we arrive?

We open our doors about 5-10 minutes before the start time, this is so we can create the messy stations just before play starts and that the materials aren’t sitting out for any length of time before your little one plays with them.

My mucky monster doesn’t like sitting in the messy trays like the other little ones, why is this?

When you see the amount of skills and sensory input that your little one gets from the experience of coming to messy play it is easy to see why. We are around to help and it is common for little ones of all ages to be hesitant initially. It is a good idea to pop them on your lap so they feel secure and then bring the mess to them rather than sitting them straight in a tray, introduce the activity gently. If your little one is overwhelmed, please don’t hesitate to speak to your class leader and ask advice.
